Lording it Up for
Sunday Dinner
Have you ever not gone to a good restaurant just because you’ve been there so many times. That’s exactly what we have done with Lords! It ridiculous really isn’t it, just because you’ve frequented a good place a few times you stop going! Why? So we went back to Lords to sample Martin’s Sunday Dinner.
It is with great pleasure that I can tell you nothing has changed! The service was excellent, the wine fabulous and the food, well, what can you say about Lords food. Well cooked, beautifully presented and lots of it. We sat in the window and chastised ourselves for being so foolish as to forget this little gem in Montpellier.
So Sunday Dinner looming? Don’t bother with the washing up after the roast just get down to Lords.... and don’t tell my Mum but their Yorkshires are better than hers!!
Sunday Dinner Served all day Sunday.
Revolution Just Up’d the STEAKS
Revolution have started to fight back and boy are they showing some of the competition what it means to be a National company with heavy clout behind it.
So what are they doing to make everyone look worried? They have a fabulous Steak Night on. 2 steaks and chips, 1 bottle of house wine £19.95!! I repeat £19.95.
You choose from 8oz sirloin, 10oz rump or Tuna steak. It comes with chips and selection of tasty sauces. Try the krupnik glaze on your steak, you’ll never have pepper sauce again.
The steak is tender and the wine good. Will we go back again? Have done already!
Check back soon as we are going to be giving you a voucher which gets you even more off on the steak night!!
Wagamama’s
Parliament St
Oh, how we wanted this to work. having been a lover of the restaurant Wagamama in London, I was genuinely excited when I saw that it was coming to town. Another little piece of London coming here, I was nearly as excited as I was to hear about Paperchase opening. Having been in London for over 15 years there are certain things I miss and authentic foreign cuisine is one of them.
So when Wagamama was open I went rushing in for my fix of Japanese fair. Unfortunately, I was greeted by a nearly completely western staff, which is not a good start. I am always dubious about the skills of chefs cooking traditional foreign food. Our British Chefs, have just about managed French Cuisine and I know a few French men who would seriously disagree with me there. But Oriental food, cooked by white chefs! This was going to be interesting. I prayed that one of the chefs was Australian or had at least spent some time there working. My experience of Aussie chefs is they are very good at oriental cooking.
So we ordered, don’t ask me exactly what we had, as it was a disaster. The starters tasted ok, one though, was not cooked and cold inside which isn’t good for anything with chicken in it. This was taken off the bill. The 2 main courses came, mine was hot and tasted bland, Janes, was cold and the noodles clumped together. This was sent back, unfortunately, to the same chef who is probably from North Yorkshire and his experience of cooking this delicate kind of food was on the 2 week training he did with the company when he joined! Anyway Jane’s replacement arrived and was hot and bland and again was removed from the bill.
So after getting half our food for free, will we be going back? No, not until I see a face that looks like he/she knows what they are doing with this style of food behind the grill. I know it is hard finding staff in Harrogate to work in the restaurants, but to get this style of food right takes knowledge and practice, it’s not something you can learn in 2 weeks on a training course. Don’t bother with the Leeds one either it’s just as bad there too. So if you want to experience a Wagamama at it’s best go to the one near Selfridges in London the staff and chefs know their stuff there.
TRUFFLETASIC
OSB Oxford St Brasserie Feb 2008
Valentines night this year we went to Oxford Street Brasserie, which was above Carphone Warehouse now know as Bebe Maman (I think) a babies clothing store. We have been extolling the virtues of this place for a while now, and if you’ve not been you are seriously missing out.
We started with a little truffle froth there will be some posh (probably french word) for this but it escapes me. So much for being a food writer. Starters swiftly followed I had leek and black truffle risotto! The best! Perfection that’s all I’m going to say.
Main course I had a steak, not any old steak here though this had a touch of..... you guessed it truffles. If you are not a truffle addict there are other things on the menu, I might add. It’s just I love them.
Dessert, Cheese a fabulous selection of cheeses including Brie with you guessed correct truffles. Now here is a sign of a good restaurant. When the cheese was served, Jane ( my partner) told Natalie (restaurant manager) about truffle honey a delicacy I had tasted in Firenze (Florence to us Brits). Explaining how this honey was served with the cheese and how fantastic it was. Two minutes later out came Truffle Honey from the kitchen.... chef had made it specially for us.
So Harrogate you have probably one of the best restaurants in the North of England right here in town, go there, it’s absolutely fantastic.
P.S This is not an advert, we love it there.
SUNDAY LUNCH @
WILLIAM & VICS
It’s been a while since we cooked on a Sunday, so why change a habit of a lifetime! We’d arrange to meet up with friends and have a late dinner together and I have to say what a great idea. We all arrived at 4pm, and presently started on a bottle of wine at the bar. Unfortunately, 2 guests were a little late, which meant by the time they got there it was time for another bottle of wine. For those of you who don’t know William and Victoria, this is your quintisensual english fare restaurant, with low ceilings and a massive menu, you really do know you are in England when you are here.
I started with pate and toast, Jane had the duck starter, which as always was excellent. Then we moved on to the main course, Roast Dinner, I had the beef although most people had the pork and only to get some Crackling, which was very good. As always with William and Vics, there was plenty of Veg, potatoes, carrots, greens, and extra gravy. All freshly cooked, not left under hot lamps until needed. This sis the closest you are going to get to a home cooked Sunday roast and that’s saying something.
I finished off with the cheese platter, in all honesty, I shouldn’t have had it as I was just being greedy as the main coarse portions are not small.
So can’t be bothered with cooking next sunday then get down to William and Vics on Cold Bath Rd. Make sure you book though as many people book several weeks at once, it’s that popular.
